General Overview

•    Location: Perth is the capital city of Western Australia, located on the southwestern coast of Australia along the Indian Ocean.
•    Population: Approximately 2.1 million residents.
•    Time Zone: Australian Western Standard Time (AWST).

Climate

•    Climate Type: Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters.
•    Summer: December to February; temperatures can reach up to 40°C (104°F).
•    Winter: June to August; temperatures range from 6°C to 25°C (43°F to 77°F).

Currency

•    Currency: Australian Dollar (AUD).
•    Currency Breakdown: The dollar is the basic unit of currency and is equal to 100 cents. Notes are available in denominations of $5, $10, $20, $50 and $100. Coinage is in denominations of 5c, 10c, 20c, 50c, $1 and $2. Shops will round up the price to the nearest 5 cents.
•    Currency Exchange: Available at airports, banks, and various exchange services throughout the city.

Transportation

•   Airport: Perth Airport (PER) is approximately 20 km (12 miles) from the city centre.
•    Public Transport: Includes buses, trains, and ferries operated by Transperth. The Smart Rider system is used for fares, or alternatively you can pay using card or cash at train stations and ferry jetties. Please note cash only on buses (no change is given– so ensure you have the correct amount!)
•    Private Transport: Rideshare services and taxis are readily available from any airport in Perth and throughout the city/suburbs.

Tourist Attractions

•    Kings Park and Botanic Garden: Offers panoramic views of the city and beautiful native gardens.
•    Cottesloe Beach: Famous for its white sandy beaches and clear waters.
•    Fremantle: A historic port city known for its maritime history, markets, and vibrant arts and music scene.
•    Perth Zoo: Home to a wide range of Australian and exotic animals.
•    Art Gallery of Western Australia: Features a diverse collection of artworks.

Shopping

•    Shopping Areas: Hay Street and Murray Street Malls, Perth City, and Westfield Karrinyup and Carousel.
•    Grocery stores: Coles and Woolworths are the main two grocery stores. They are located in most suburbs throughout Perth. 
•    Markets: Fremantle Markets (Friday-Sunday) and Subiaco markets (Saturday mornings).

•    Cuisine: Diverse options including Australian, Asian, European, and Middle Eastern cuisines. Fresh seafood is a local specialty.
•    Popular Areas: Northbridge, Subiaco, and Leederville are known for their dining options.

Safety and Health

•    Emergency Number: 000 for police, fire, and ambulance.
•    Health Services: Public and private hospitals are available. Travel insurance is recommended.
•    Vaccination requirements: The only certificate required is a Yellow Fever Vaccination Certificate for visitors who have been in a Yellow Fever area six days prior to entering Australia.

Power

•    Domestic electricity supply: 230 – 250 volts. 110-volt appliances such as hairdryers and contact lens sterilisers cannot be used without a transformer.
•    Plugs: Standard three pin plugs are fitted to domestic appliances.
